February - The month of Amethyst

Amethyst, the birthstone of February.

Big clap to ourselves and everyone else surviving through the second months of 2021, it hasn't been the easiest start of the year but we are powering through it! February is a very special month, there are so many different festivals around the world but there is one festival that is definitely universal - Valentine’s Day. It is a day we celebrate love, love for yourself and the others. If you are looking for ideas please check out our instagram stories, we will be doing a Valentine’s Day gifts guide daily this week:)

Back to looking into our birthstone of the month, Amethyst is one of the most well-known purple quartz. While the word "amethyst" makes most people think of a dark purple gem, amethyst actually occurs in many different shades of purple colours. The purple colour can be so light that it is barely perceptible or so dark that it is nearly opaque. It can be pale pinkish-violet to deep reddish-purple. Amethyst exists in this wide range of colors and it can be cut into many shapes and sizes allowing it to become a very popular gem for fine jewellery.

As it is the February birthstone, amethyst has always been linked to love and romance. However, throughout history the gemstone has also been connected to luck, good fortune and general positivity. Historically, amethyst was kept as a talisman as it was believed to prevents drunkeness. Because of its wine-like color, early Greek legends associated amethyst with Bacchus, the god of wine. Other legends reflected beliefs that amethyst kept its wearer clear-headed and quick-witted in battle and in business affairs.

In the Middle Ages, amethyst was once considered equal in value to ruby, emerald, and sapphire. It became a symbol of royalty and the rich purple of amethyst can be found within regal wardrobes and jewels across Europe and Asia. Later in the 18th century, an abundant source of amethyst was found in Brazil and nowadays amethyst is widely accessible. Here in ikku London, we offer a range of jewellery containing Amethyst from ring, earrings to necklace.
